*AIMER is an -ER verb, which means it has a regular set of endings shared by all -ER verbs: !like: - travailler

- manger

- regarder

- tu aimes = tu travailles

*To say we like people and objects, we say:

- J'aime le chocolat.

- Ils aiment les voitures.

- Nous aimons Paul.

*To say we like activities, like this:

- Elle aime nager.

- Vous aimez faire du ski.

*The opposite of aimer is détester:

- Elles détestent l'exercice.

*To say we like something alot:

- we use the adverb "beaucoup" or the verb " adorer":

- J'aime beaucoup le tennis.

or

- J'adore le tennis.

*To prefer = préférer

- Il aime le badminton, mais il préfère le tennis.

LE VERBE VOULOIR :

- je veux

- tu veux

- il veut

- nous voulons

- vous voulez

- ils veulent

*Vouloir, to want, is an irregular verb; so it has to be memorized. It is not hard if you use it often.

* We use vouloir the same way we use aimer, in front of things and activities:

- Je veux de la soupe.

- Il veut du café.

- Elle veut courir.

- Nous voulons danser.

*We can use vouloir to express ideas in the future by using indicators such as :

- Demain (tomorrow)

- Dans deux heures ( in two hrs.)

- Tantôt (later)

- Il veut danser demain.

 

LE SANDWICH NÉGATIF:

*We can make an idea negative by making a sandwich with:

- NE.....PAS and a verb in the middle

- Je ne regarde pas la télé.

- Il ne veut pas manger maintenant

- Nous ne travaillons pas ce soir.

*With ne and verbs that start with a vowel, the -e gets dropped and we put in an apostrophe:

- Je ne aime pas.

becomes

-Je n'aime pas.

- Il n'aime pas courir.

- Nous n'aimons pas la poutine.

*When using the verb vouloir, ne.... pas is followed by de most times, to indicate the word "any":

- Je ne veux pas de frites.

- I don't want any fries.

- Vous ne prenez pas de café?

- Don't you want any coffee?

- Elle ne veut pas de visite.

- She doesn't want any visitors.

 

LE VERBE AVOIR

j'ai tu as il a nous avons vous avez ils ont *One of the most important verbs in French, the verb avoir= to have has many uses. 1-It shows belonging. - Il a une voiture. - Vous avez un rhume?   2-It is used in fixed or idiomatic expressions. - Nous avons faim. - Elle a 12 ans. - Ils ont froid.   3-It indicates the past. *When used before another verb, the verbe avoir indicates actions in the past. - Elle a regardé la télé. - Nous avons travaillé. - Elles ont mangé le gâteau.

 

LE PASSÉ COMPOSÉ:

*The p.c. is comprised of 3 parts:

1. a subject pronoun:

- Il a nettoyé la voiture.

- Nous avons porté des jeans.

2. a helping verb:

- Il a nettoyé la voiture.

- Nous avons porté des jeans.

3. a past participle:

- Il a nettoyé la voiture.

- Nous avons porté des jeans.

FORMING THE PASSÉ COMPOSÉ

1. with your subject:

- Paul

- Nous

- Ils

2. add the appropriate conjugaison of avoir:

- Paul a

- Nous avons

- Ils ont

3. add the participle:

- Paul a mangé

- Nous avons chanté

- Ils ont torturé le chat.

LE VERBE ALLER

je vais tu vas il va nous allons vous allez ils vont *This important verb has many uses: 1. aller à = to go somewhere 2. aller + another verb = futur tense 3. idiomatic expressions   *When we use aller as the verb to go: 1. It is followed by a variation of à + the definite article : - à + le = au - à + la = à la - à + les = les - Je vais au restaurant. (m) - Marie va à la pharmacie. - Nous allons aux États-Unis. 2. The (near) future will be seen in the next chapter. 3. A few idiomatic (irregular) expressions that use the verb aller : - Allez ! = C'mon, you're kidding. - Vas-t-en ! = Get lost ! - Vas-y ! = Go for it ! - Comment ça va ? = How is it going ?

LE FUTUR PROCHE

*The futur proche is comprised of 3 parts: 1. the subject - Charles va danser ce soir. - Nous allons trvailler demain. - Elle va prendre un taxi. 2. the helping verb (aller) - Charles va danser ce soir. - Nous allons travailler demain. - Elle va prendre un taxi. 3. the infinitive or litle verb - Charles va danser ce soir. - Nous allons travailler demain. - Elle va prendre un taxi.   *One of the common mistakes for beginning learners is to get to forget that aller takes V's : je vais, ta vas... *With aller think V as in Voyage. - Je vais prendre du café bientôt. - Tu vas téléphoner à ma mère. - Elle va courir cet après-midi. *Aller is one of the most important verbs in French and must be memorized. *When working with the third part, the action, it stays the same for all conjugations. *Remember, just grab the litle verb: - travailler, manger, visiter - Il va travailler demain. - Je vais travailler - Il va manger des frites. - Nous allons manger des frites.

 

LE NÉGATIF DU PASSÉ

*To convey negative ideas in the past tense, we use the negative sandwich around the auxiliary and the past participle. - Il a mangé la soupe. - Il n'a pas mangé la soupe. - Vous avez vu le film. - Vous n'avez pas vu le film. - Ils ont trouvé la route. - Ils n'ont pas trouvé la route

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

LE NÉGATIF DU FUTUR

*To convey ideas in the future, it is just a matter of using the ne...pas sandwich. *The sandwich goes around the auxiliary (helping) verb: - Je vais manger la pomme. - Je ne vais pas manger la pomme. - Vous allez sortir avec Marie. - Vous n'allez pas sortir avec Marie.
